WRPG vs JRPG thread

Copying my posts here for archival reasons.

TypeLunatic !mbjwN8Mg4c 12/25/09(Fri)18:43 No.45237558
File1261784581.jpg-(28 KB, 185x200, 1254660012165.jpg)
28 KB

I like how casually the term RPG is thrown around.

JRPGs hardly classify as RPGs in my opinion. There is no role playing involved. I'd hate to say it, but even the paper thin 'illusion of choice' Bethesda games offer is still more role play than jrpgs "Will you do this?" "no" "You have no choice. Will you do this?" "no" "You have no choice. Will you do this?"

You cannot determine how your main character will react and grow throughout the game. Let's take, oh, FF7 for example.

Cloud is the same no matter how you play through the game. Regardless of what you do, what choices you make, he's always going to become that vegetable in a wheelchair in disc 3.

Even though people claim Dragon Age's story is forced and linear, there are multiple ways to achieve it, that are indeed, examples of role play.

Earl Eamon's son is posessed? Do you want to risk everything, including the city of redcliffe, to travel to the mage tower and waste time there gathering Lyrium to do the ritual safely?

Do you want to sacrifice the boy's mother to do the ritual?

Do you want to kill the child?

Sure, they all come to the same (well, similar) solutions, however it's up to how you play your character to decide. Is your character a person with no sense of value for a human life? Are they a paragon of good who feel no innocent should be slain, even if they are possessed by a being of complete evil?

THAT is what makes WRPGS and JRPGS different.
Stats, bars, exp, and leveling up does not an RPG make.

Of course, that's why I also play WoW on RP servers. People don't really understand the purpose of RPGs anymore.

TypeLunatic !mbjwN8Mg4c 12/25/09(Fri)18:50 No.45237940
File1261785001.jpg-(207 KB, 504x641, game-borderland.jpg)
207 KB

>>45237558
To follow up, this isn't to say that wrpgs are all TRUE TO ROLEPLAYING GAME style.

This heap of shit here is classified as a "role playing shooter" but there is no ROLE PLAYING involved. In short, JRPGs are like borderlands. RPG in name only.

I enjoy both W and J RPGs. However, WRPGs will usually be superior in terms of having actual ROLE PLAY and the fact the character is your's to shape in terms of more than just stats.

Competitive Gaming: How to be a poor sport and get paid for it

So, as most of you know, I'm not very big on people who play fighting games and the like by tournament rules. Now, some will jump off the handle and say "WELL YOU'RE JUST A SCRUB AND CAN'T PLAY LIKE THE PROS" or some such bullshit.

However, from an onlookers standpoint, "competitive gaming" is probably the WORST thing to happen to the video game player base in modern times. I'm not saying competitive games are bad, not at all. The majority of "pro" players, however, are awful and may not (or may very well) be aware of how they're hurting the game community.

Now, you might say "how can playing a game at advanced levels hurt it?" Well, for starters, Super Smash Bros has become somewhat of a laughing stock, and competitive players have tried to make what started as a family friendly party game out to be some kind of serious 1 ON 1 TOURNAMENT BRAWLER.

That aside, competitive gaming weeds out everything in the game that isn't 'efficient' or 'guaranteed to win'. As such everyone uses the top items/characters in order to secure a win. Ok that's fine. But what crosses the line is when these "top ranked items/characters" dominate the charts. In this case, fighting games are big offenders. Sometimes, interesting characters are cast aside because they are "shit" or "worthless" and no one really puts the effort into using them to their full potential. It also makes it difficult because EVERYONE is using one of two (or maybe THREE) of the "top" characters.

The real issue with 'competitive gaming' is that it's actually driving a rut between players. People who choose to enjoy the game their way or challenge themselves by using "low tier" characters/tactics/items are scoffed at and mocked, driven away so everyone can continue using the same two things against each other in a repetitive, 'professional' cycle.

Meanwhile bad blood brews between "casuals" and "pros", further splitting the game world apart and causing more pockets of elitism.

In the end, it's not worth it. This competitive gaming shit needs to stop, and sadly, it won't. So next time you tune into some EVO stream, or hear some goons bragging about Halo online, remember. This is the problem with video games.

"The UN has told Japan it must ban adult games and erotic manga featuring themes of rape, calling Japan’s protection of fictional women from fictional rape “inadequate.”

The demands come by way of the UN’s radical feminist arm, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, or CEDAW. Extreme feminist pressure group Equality Now previously vowed to make them seek such a ban, and it seems CEDAW happily complied.

Calling Japan’s treatment of women “inadequate” and “regrettable,” CEDAW formally demanded Japan end “human rights violations” against women by banning games and manga featuring themes of “rape and sexual violence.” It is not clear whether they extend their demands to anime, AV or literature, though this seems likely.

The suggestion that fictional works such as manga serve to promote sexual violence is entirely unproven; it is notable that Japan has some of the lowest rates of crime and sexual violence in the world, and yet some of the most abundant pornography, much of which deals with such themes.

This is of course undoubtedly tied to the intervention of busybody international feminist groups in Japanese politics after the Rapelay scandal…"

I like how all this shit is over CARTOON WOMEN, and yet no one seems to realize that Japanese LIVE ACTION PORN is as full of the shit as CARTOON PORN is, if not moreso.

ha ha ha. oh wow.

So I stumbled across a doujin fighter when browsing the net. Turns out it was freeware. Typical moe fanservice all female fighter. Yawn.

Then I saw screenshots. Wow. Fucking WOW. This is a FREEWARE game, and yet it's graphics, i can safely say, put Street Fighter 3's animation frames and even BlazBlue's sprites to SHAME.

While it's undoubtedly a T&A fanservice game (with loli sidekick support chars) the engine is reminiscent of old fighting games, before LOLOLOL COMBOS came into effect. Of course, since it was made it using a FighterMaker style program, it's got some bugs and exploitable aspects.

Regardless, the person and/or group behind this deserve jobs. The screenshot above, I'm playing the girl on the left. Now, you see a chick in barely any clothes, with 2 big guns (hurhur c wut i did thar?) and figure "oh hey, yeah, shallow fanservice char"

It seems her fighting style revolves entirely around gun-fu stuff like in equilibrium. Dashing causes her to spin and get into the stance in the screenshot. Dashing again causes her to change stances. Using certain buttons causes her to kick/fire and change stance/fire and return to neutral/do a super.

it's practically like Siegfried from Soul Calibur in 2d form...with guns.

SOMEONE GIVE THESE PEOPLE A FUCKING JOB.

So. Lolicon erogames and such are being censored/banned/what have you, due to this crazy feminist group.

A poster on 4chan mentioned...there's no ban for shotacon stuff. Last I checked, wasn't stuff dealing with underaged boys just as bad as underaged girls?

ha-ha! hypocrisy.

Outlawing them will only cause the problem to rear it's ugly head again, because otakus and creeps will have no medium to turn to and vent their frustrations. If I remember right, lolicons tend to hate real life pedophiles, too...Huh. Well, the times are chaging, I suppose.

So as many of you are (not) aware of, there was a certain shitstorm that arose over the selling of a specific Japanese erogame on Amazon. The game in question was called "RapeLay" and, as the name suggests, revolved around rape.

Well, some American watchdog groups or some such business found out about this and unleashed the dogs of war. While this resulted in Amazon no longer selling said game, something rather hilarious has surfaced because of this.

Illusion, the circle responsible for RL and other erogames such as Artificial Girl, Sexy Beach, and Schoolmate, are releasing a new game. The kicker? Because of the shitstorm over RL, they're supposedly coding this game to be impossible (or at least extremely difficult) to get running on non-Japanese PCs, let alone English patch it.

This brings me to the point of my post. I find it rather hilarious that they go out of their way to keep Americans from playing these games on account of what happened with a previous release of their's. It's as if they actually care about what the American people think about them, which is rather amusing.

...Looking back at the earlier content of this post, I'm starting to think I know too much about some things for my own good. Hm.
